Penola chases down T20 win

North Sportsmans v Penola

Penola picked up a solid win on Thursday night as they took down North Sportsmans at Marist Park in the Globe Hotel Big Bash competition.

The Tigers began the night at the crease and they did not get off to the best of starts as opener Alex Hutton was dismissed with the first ball, while Nick McInerney also did not have a great night, falling for a duck after facing just seven balls.

Both batters fell victim to Penola’s Jacob Edwards.

North skipper Elliott Fisher picked up the slack after the slow start, making a quick-fire 24 off 15 before also falling to Edwards.

The struggles continued in the middle order for North after a duck from Brad Robinson and only a single from Mitch Lewis.

Late in the innings the Tigers got a bit of a run boost as Isaac Mulraney made nine, while Nicolas Brown had a big performance putting 24 on the board.

North finished their innings on 78 runs.

Penola’s Edwards had a great innings with the ball, taking four wickets while Bredon Smart and Joshua Doyle both took two of their own.

With a very manageable score to chase the Eagles wasted no time chipping into the Tigers’ lead, with Jack Mullan making a run a ball to tally 11.

The strong start continued as Bredon Smart had a solid contribution at the crease, putting 17 on the board.

Penola continued to edge closer to making the runs with big performances from captain Michael Waters and Joshua Smith.

Waters had a great innings, making 25 while Smith was also very solid with 16.

After the strong start Penola made up North’s runs in only 12 overs, sealing their second win of the season.

Round two’s match between East Gambier and Mil Lel, originally scheduled for last Thursday, will be played tonight at Allan Scott Park at 5.20pm.
