Penola gets back on winners’ list with against reigning champs

West Gambier v Penola

The Penola Eagles secured their first win of the season on Saturday, taking down the reigning premiers West Gambier at Malseed Park by just a single point.

It was a pretty even first term as both sides started the match well.

Penola was able to take a slim lead

into quarter time after putting three goals on the board while the Roos were just behind them with a two goal quarter.

Heading into the second quarter the Eagles held a four point lead.

In the second term the Roos bounced back well as they hit the scoreboard with three goals.

However Penola were able to stay in the match as their one goal quarter resulted in them trailing at halftime by seven points.

In the third quarter the Eagles worked hard to get back into the contest and finish the quarter with the lead as they kicked four goals.

Despite that it was still anyone’s game as the Roos put three goals on the board and headed into the deciding quarter trailing by one.

It was a very competitive contest in the final term with not much separating the two sides as two goals were scored from both teams.

Along with the two goals both sides kicked a point in the final term which did not help the Roos as they could not outscore the Eagles in the final term and would come up short by a point.

Beau Shinnick was a standout for the Eagles in the big win along with Jak Ryan in the ruck.

Penola defeated West Gambier 10.8 (68) to 10.7 (67).

Casterton Sandford v East Gambier

Casterton Sandford secured another solid Limestone Coast Football Netball League victory on Saturday as they took on the visiting East Gambier in Casterton.

The Doggies got off to a strong start in the opening quarter and hit the scoreboard well with four goals in the quarter.

The Cats on the other hand were not too far behind them as they kicked two goals along with a couple behinds.

After their strong start, East took a 10 point lead into quarter time.

The Cats were hot in the second term and did well to get back into the match with some accurate goal kicking.

Putting five goals on the board, Casterton took the lead going into halftime as they held the Doggies to just two goals.

Going into the second half Casterton held a six point lead.

The Doggies began to slow down in the third term as they failed to score a goal and only put three points on the board.

The Cats continued to build on their lead as they began to pull away from East, kicking three goals in the quarter.

After another solid quarter the Cats headed into the final term with a 23 point lead.

In the final term the Doggies finally found some success in the forwardline as they kicked three goals.

However the Cats were just overall better in the final term and did not let East’s three goal quarter effect them as they booted five goals to seal the win.

Colby Munro was a standout player for the Cats with a three goal performance while Jack Thompson and Hamish Mccrae were also great as they too scored three goals.

Casterton Sandford defeated East Gambier 15.5 (95) to 9.6 (60).

Millicent v South Gambier

Millicent picked up a great win on Saturday night as they dished South Gambier their first loss of the season under the lights at McLaughlin Park.

In the opening term the Dees dominated most of the play with several forward 50 entries.

However they could not take advantage of them as they struggled in front of goals which would prove to be the theme of the night as they kicked seven points in the opening term.

With the Saints limited shots at goal in the first term they were able to hit them as they kicked the only goal in the quarter.

In the second term the Dees continued to struggle in front of goal as their first goal still eluded them as they kicked four points in the term.

Millicent started to build a solid lead in the second term as they put two more goals on the board.

At halftime the Dees were still in the match despite their poor play as they only trailed by 10 points.

In the third term the Dees improved their kicking as they put two goals on the board.

However it did not do much in

cutting down the Saints lead as Millicent kicked another two goals and went into the final term with a nine point lead.

In the final quarter the Dees were able to get another goal

on the board but the match was out of reach for them as the Saints kicked another goal along with a few points to help secure the 12 point win.

Kade Varcoe was a top performer for the Saints while Jacob Carger and Harry Gibbs both kicked two goals.

Millicent defeated South Gambier 6.8 (44) to 3.14 (32).
