Penola in tune for acoustic gathering

Excitement is building for the Penola Coonawarra Acoustic Music Gathering, which is set to go ahead from March 12-14 at McCorquindale Park.

The gathering boasts an impressive line-up of 16 acts which includes an array of music genres with an emphasis on singer-songwriters. Acts include headliner Pete Denahy, who blends fiddle tunes, bluegrass-style original songs and madcap comedy, much-loved Mount Gambier duo Christy and Jason Wallace, young Penola resident Georgie Wyly and Barkindji woman Nancy Bates, who is an accomplished singer-songwriter.

Penola’s Anne Miller, who is on the committee organising the event, said everything was coming together well. “I’m hoping people will come to listen to original music,” she said.

Ms Miller said the event had attracted plenty of community interest and there was great excitement around the town.

The gathering will accommodate for those with disabilities, with at least one disabled toilet and all halls allow for disability access. “We will do the very best we possibly can to make it accommodating for everyone,” Ms Miller said.

There will be two performance stages plus open mic stages to ease crowd congestion and people will be encouraged to social distance and practice good hygiene. Ms Miller said there could be limits on numbers in halls and seats would be cleaned regularly. “We are hoping people will support our endeavours for a COVID-safe event,” she said.

Tickets are available on the website www.pcmusicgathering.com.au. Adult tickets are $65 for the weekend or $25 for a day. Family tickets can be purchased for $45 and ages 16 and under are free. Unpowered sites can be booked for $10 per night.

The committee is seeking volunteers to help during the weekend. Contact pcmusicgathering@gmail.com to register interest in participating in the youth masterclass mentoring program or volunteering.
