Penola’s town entrance statements have been given some attention from local school students.
Wattle Range Council is currently landscaping the town entrance statements which have been erected at both the northern and southern approaches to Penola.
The landscaping is seen as an important project to transform the underutilised areas into attractive and welcoming entrances to the town, thereby bringing tourists into Penola and mitigating the impact of both bypass and COVID-19 pandemic to the businesses in Penola.
The project is jointly funded by council and the Federal Government under phase one of the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Staff have been working to get the ground ready for revegetation since council approved the landscaping concept plan, prepared by a small team consisting of a student and a lecturer from University of Adelaide.
Students from Penola Primary School and Mary McKillop Memorial School participated in planting 45 trees on the northern site recently.
This will be followed by council staff planting roses and lavender and then installing lighting for the large gum trees on the southern site.
The project is planned for completion by the end of the year with an official opening of the town entrances proposed in January 2022.
