Pilgrims converge on Penola church for Jubilee Year mass

Catholic Archbishop of Adelaide the Most Reverend Patrick O’Regan recently led a special Jubilee Year Mass for pilgrims at St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Penola.

The Sacrament of Reconciliation was offered for one hour prior to Mass and it was a special part of the Pilgrimage.

Archbishop O’Regan told The SE Voice of the significance of the religious observances.

“In this Jubilee Year, walking through the doors of a designated Jubilee Church such as St Joseph’s in Penola, we may receive the plenary indulgence,” the Archbishop said.

“This is the total renewal of our hearts, through the ordinary yet extraordinary channels of grace: Confession, Communion, prayer for the Holy Father, and detachment from sin.”

He was accompanied to Penola by five Diocesan staff, including Executive Director of Pastoral Life and Mission Sarah Moffatt, and Assistant Director of Pastoral Life and Mission Peter Bierer.

Both are actively involved in the formation of the upcoming Diocesan Synod in 2026.

Diocesan Staff assisted the local Penola Parish musicians to lead the music.

The Mass concluded with the Jubilee theme song, Pilgrims of Hope, written by Pierangelo Sequeri and set to music by Francesco Meneghello, translated from Italian to English.

A supper of pumpkin soup and rolls was served from the Mary MacKillop Penola Centre following the Mass.

Fifty-six pilgrims registered for the event from Kapunda, Clare, Saddleworth, Elizabeth Park, Salisbury North, Craigburn Farm, Heathpool, Pooraka and Port Victoria.

There were also 50 local parishioners in attendance.

A number of Catholic parish groups have also visited Penola in this Jubilee Year.
