Pioneers fight to stay in hunt

The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will fight for their season tomorrow night when they take the court against the Ringwood Hawks in an NBL1 South Conference semi final.

The Pioneers will need to make the most of their second chance at a finals tilt after going down by 10 points to Geelong United on Mount Gambier’s home court last Friday.

The team again will have the home court advantage at Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre when they take on the Hawks.

Head coach Matt Sutton said his side, which finished second in the regular season, was up for the challenge.

“It’s at the end where every match is a tough match, so we are looking forward to the contest,” he said.

“We have played Ringwood twice, they have beat us both times, they beat us by 20 over there and 10 I think here.

“We are at full strength, they will be at full strength, both teams will be at full power so it should be a highly entertaining game.”

Sutton said his team was determined to give it their all to progress to the preliminary final in a week’s time, after losing to Geelong United last Friday.

“On Friday night it appeared from our end we were not doing a good job on defence, they were able to get some scores which gave them momentum,” he said.

“We felt our defence gave them some early opportunities that we were not pleased with.

“The rest of the gam played out how we anticipated it to play out, we were doing a lot, but a lot has to go right when you are chasing back from a double figure lead.

“We changed some things, we were happy with the response, we were working really hard to get back against a team that was playing really well.”

Sutton said after a huge crowd at Wulanda last week, he was hoping that fans would again fill the stadium to cheer the home side on.

“Playing at home is a benefit, the second chance was required cos we did not get the job done the first time,” he said.

“We are fortunate to be in that position and aim to make the most of it this week.

“Normally a big crowd lifts us, last week we did not have the effect to give the crowd the energy to give us the energy back.

“Playing at home in must win situation it’s going to be a big advantage for us.

“It’s us against the defending champs, both of our seasons are on the line, we are looking forward to it.”

Tomorrow night’s semi final will tip off at 7.30pm
