The OneFortyOne Pioneers women will look to return to their winning ways when they head to Victoria for a double header road trip this weekend.
After being one of the NBL1 South conference’s pace setters in the early part of the season, the Pioneers have suffered four consecutive losses, leaving them sitting sixth on the ladder.
Round 10 kicks off a flurry of games for Mount Gambier, with eight matches scheduled in the next 30 days, which includes two Victorian double headers, a home double header, and two Friday night matches at Wulanda.
It’s set to be a sprint to the finish before finals, but the Pioneers’ losing form should turn around this weekend as they take the court against the Kilsyth Cobras and Diamond Valley Eagles, who both inhabit the lower echelons of the ladder.
The Pioneers have welcomed back Zitina Aokuso following her trip to China to play with the Opals in the lead up to the Olympics.
The Opals claimed a 2-1 series victory against the People’s Republic of China, with Aokuso a dominant contributor.
Aokuso knocked down 20 points in the second match of the three game series, helping the Aussies to an 80-72 win, before backing up with another 16 points in the third game.
Aokuso marked her return to the Pioneers side last week with a double double against Keilor, recording 20 points and 10 rebounds.
She is sure to again be a focal point when this weekend’s double header kicks off on Saturday night against the Cobras, who sit 18th with only two wins.
Sunday’s match against the Eagles may prove slightly more challenging, as Diamond Valley has recorded four wins to sit 15th.
