Plastic oh so fantastic

South Australia’s longest running Lego event will return this October long weekend much to the joy of local Lego lovers.

The seventh installment of the Empak Homes BrickGambier will take place at the Mount Gambier Show Hall on Sunday and Monday from 10am – 4pm each day.

There will be over 40 exhibitors from the South East, Adelaide, Melbourne and as far away as Tasmania showing off their Lego displays which will include Harry Potter, Star Wars and Lego City themes, a Disney Incredibles mosaic, “out of the box” creations, a large ship and a spaceship.Empak Homes BrickGambier organiser Emma Robinson said this year there will be more interactive areas for children to play.

“It is really hard to say to them you’re not allowed to touch while they walk around, so giving them an area to play, colour in and things like that is really cool,” she said.

“We are going to develop that a bit more than what we have in previous years.

“We will also have games and puzzles and things like that made out of Lego for the young people and older people to do as well.

“The actual exhibits, there are only a few that have been displayed before and the rest are all new.

“Someone might build something to a theme so we might have had a similar theme before but they are actually different models.

“We are seeing a lot more older people come without children or 20 year olds that do not have children yet.

“I personally think it is for all ages. There are thousands and thousands adult fans of Lego out there.”

Mrs Robinson said there will be a tribute to Empak Homes BrickGambier exhibitor Michael Smith who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

“He had been displaying since 2018 at BrickGambier which was really lovely,” Mrs Robinson said.

“He booked six tables. The family have kindly let us use the display so we can still actually display it for him and we will have a bit of a tribute for him as well.

“Michael very much liked old school Lego. The kind of Lego that he had when he was a child of the seventies and eighties. So it is very much focused on that.

“What he does is he will often take a new concept and then make it in the old style or he will take a car that our parents or grandparents may have had as a kid and he has upsized them to make them a lot bigger.”

Tickets for Empak Homes BrickGambier are available online now at brickgambier.com.au or at the door.
