Players make statement as tennis season resumes

Mount Gambier made its intentions clear in Division 3 when the Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association season fired back to life on Saturday. The side made use of its home conditions and shot to the ladder lead thanks to a convincing 12-0 sweep of West Gambier.

It was all one-way traffic in the singles in particular with Ben Kerin, Amelia Hancock and Lucy Clarke enjoying faultless performances. West was more competitive in doubles with a couple of hard-fought rubbers.

Toby Stutley and Mark Egan brought the fight to Tim Benny and Kerin and lost 6-4. Charli Hockey and Charlotte Patzel were also competitive against Grace Edwards and Hancock, but lost by the same score.

Glencoe/Centrals jumped up to second position on the ladder with a 8-4 win over Mount Schank away from home, while Mil Lel Green had a bye. Suttontown maintained fourth spot with a four-set victory over a fighting Uniting Church outfit.

Heading into the round the closest match up on paper appeared to be Moorak v Mil Lel Blue. After the six singles contests, it certainly proved to be the case as just two sets separated the sides.

However, Mil Lel Blue dominated the opening three doubles rubbers and eventually ran out four-set winners. This weekend Division 3 returns to its usual Saturday afternoon timeslot headlined by a top-of-the-table clash between Glencoe/Centrals and Mount Gambier.

The majority of Division 2 matches will take place under lights at Olympic Park on Friday night, while Division 1 is on Saturday afternoon.
