Players shine in the sun

On a great day for sport, players and spectators alike made the most of the great conditions on offer at Olympic Park for the fifth round of the 2021 Mount Gambier Netball Association season.

Some great games played out in each of the grades and the A Grade, the match between Saints and Hobitz did not disappoint spectators.

Saints came out hard to take an early lead, but Hobitz did not let this faze them, coming back late in the quarter.

Saints defenders made things hard for the Hobitz girls to get the ball into their goalies.

But a second quarter blitz by Hobitz created a 14-goal lead.

Mid-court work was high with space being closed by both sides allowing for turnovers and Hobitz took full advantage of this.

At the end of the game, Hobitz took the win by 17 goals led by Suzanne Crowe and Kym Stewart.

Amazons and Zodiacs also put on a show with some great teamwork moving the ball well from one end to the other.

Defence work from Amazons allowed them to gain rebounds and take interceptions all over the court, while some strong shooting saw them take an 11-goal lead.

Amazons came back to the court with a renewed vigour being the faster, but unfortunate missed shots at goal and loose passes were costly.

Amazons took their second with for the season by 26 goals with  team leaders Jodie Farrell and Eykolina Benny.

The winning margin between Vicis and Intruders was also 20 goals.

Vicis were required to dig deep and play a tougher game up against the consistent Intruders side and the latter’s shooting was on point from any space under the ring.

Intruders managed to gain more interceptions, which allowed them to take a six-goal lead by the main break.

But Vicis stepped up in a  low-scoring third quarter before running out of legs as last whistle approached.

Best players for Vicis were Eliza Harding and Jessica Grigg, whilst Intruders looked to Kate Biszko and Amy Bignell.

In A2, the game between Intruders and Saints came down to just three goals in a tussle from the start, while Hobitz and Zodiacs had a bit of a one-sided game.

B1 also had a close game between Intruders Black and Hobitz Blue, with the final score coming down to two goals.

Another tense game saw Amazons take their win against Hobitz Red by nine goals, while Zodiacs had a great 28-goal win against Intruders Orange.

Great laughter was heard amongst the B2 sides this week with Intruders unfortunately going down to Vicis by 12, whilst Saints had a good 28-goal win over Hobitz.

The 17 and Under competition is showing some great up and coming players and Intruders and Saints contested an arm wrestle across the court.

Defence work was high all over the court for the game with the Intruders goalies again stepping up well and converting to a high level.

Hobitz Red and Hobitz Blue played off in their in-house battle with the Red side coming out two goal winners for the game.

The 15 and Under competition did not disappoint and stepped up a  notch with their work rates increasing each week.

Zodiacs Gold and Saints had a close encounter, with three goals separating them at the final whistle.

Intruders and Zodiacs Blue also having a close play off with their difference being seven goals.

Vicis and Hobitz were the only ones to have a larger margin, with the latter taking the win by 26 goals.

The young players within the 13 & Under A & B competitions have adapted well to the change in teams with some great games also being played, while the GO and SET players are continuing to improve their fundamental skills.
