The swimming pontoon at the Front Beach at Robe is to return to the waters of Rivoli Bay.
It follows extensive repairs and a newly finalised seabed licence.
The return is due to the collaborative efforts of the Robe District Council, Robe Surf Lifesaving Club and local professional lobster fisherman Jack Perkins.
Following a special council meeting lasting 20 minutes last week, council has formally approved the deployment of the pontoon, a beloved feature of Robe’s summer tradition for decades.
Robe Mayor Lisa Ruffell expressed her enthusiasm for its return.
“The swimming pontoon has been a cherished part of Robe’s summer experience for over 50 years,” Mayor Ruffell said.
“We are thrilled to see it returning to Front Beach, and we extend our appreciation to all those who have worked together to make this possible.”
The Robe Surf Lifesaving Club has taken on the responsibility of conducting weekly inspections of the pontoon to ensure its safety and compliance with insurance requirements.
Club Patrol Captain Luke Turner highlighted the club’s commitment.
“We are proud to assist the council in maintaining the safety of this wonderful local asset,” Mr Turner said.
“Our volunteers are ready to begin inspections immediately to make sure the pontoon remains safe for the community and visitors alike.”
The necessary repairs, including repairs of a hazardous ladder, were carried out by council staff and a detailed above and under water inspection of the pontoon has been completed.
Thanks to the support of Mr Perkins, a professional fisherman who generously assisted in deploying the pontoon, it will be positioned in Guichen Bay for the enjoyment of beachgoers.
“The support from the Robe Surf Life Saving Club and Jack Perkins, combined with the dedication of the council staff, has been invaluable in ensuring the pontoon will find its way out for the summer season,” Mayor Ruffell said. “
“We are grateful for everyone’s contributions to this project.”
With these safety measures in place and the commitment of all involved, the pontoon will be deployed as soon as possible, providing a safe and enjoyable experience for swimmers at Front Beach.
