Mount Gambier martial arts competitor Liam Povey did his Dojo proud on the weekend in his Budo MMA debut.
The 15-year-old, who trains at the Mount Gambier Martial Arts Academy, competed in Judd Reid’s “The 8 Man Eliminator” in Melbourne on Saturday night as an undercard fight.
The mammoth event featured Australia’s best full contact talent all in the one location.
While Povey came up short in his match against Kyan Redfern from Parkes, NSW, his corner said it was certainly “something to remember”.
Povey challenged Redfern to an extension where the teenagers fought it out for three gruelling rounds.
He held the upper hand in the stand up and striking, while his opponent had a little more experience with the ground game.
Povey’s trainer and father Greg Povey, the Dojo’s Sensei, said it was an entertaining fight and skilful display of all round fighting which the packed house thoroughly enjoyed.
“While Liam did not get the victory, he once again gained the respect from his opponent,” Povey Snr said.
