Prestigious cricket honour up for grabs

The prestigious Smith-Walker Trophy will be contested at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr on January 22.

The Millicent and District Cricket Association and the Mount Burr and Rendelsham cricket clubs instituted the annual trophy several years ago in memory of two late cricketers Alan Crawford, “Mick” Walker and Ian “Rocky” Smith.

Both men served in the armed forces during World War II and then returned to their home communities and to sport, work and their families.

Walker was a football and cricket stalwart at Mt Burr until his death in 2011 while Smith was likewise actively involved in the Hatherleigh Football Club and Rendelsham Cricket Club until his death a few years later.

COVID permitting, the Rendelsham and the Mount Burr cricketers will play a normal 40 over per innings game on January 22.

A twilight 20/20 match will follow comprising of retired cricketers over 40 years of age who have played for their respective clubs

The first contest for the Smith-Walker Trophy was at “Mick” and Jean Walker Oval at Mount Burr in 2014.

It is currently held by Mount Burr, while 2022 is a momentous year for Rendelsham as its picturesque oval has been in use for 110 years.
