Pro tennis coach to guide junior talent

The Millicent Tennis Association has secured professional tennis coach Taegan White for the upcoming season and is offering a number of junior programs.

Spokesperson Melissa McGrath was excited to share the news that White will be the association’s junior development coach.

“Taegan comes with a wealth of knowledge… and is excited to be in Millicent and coaching,” she said.

“She is continually working with Tennis Australia to provide opportunities for our kids.”

White is offering a number of clinics for beginners through to advanced juniors, the first of many is a free ‘No Limits’ girls tennis squad for juniors aged 8-10 years.

The sessions are held on Thursdays at the Millicent tennis courts during Term 3.

Meanwhile juniors have until August 29 to register for the Red Ball Rumble and Yellow Ball Rumble programs.

The rumble programs will be held over four weeks starting on September 5 with each session duration being 60 minutes.

Red ball, for juniors under 10 years, will be held from 4.30pm to 5.30pm, while Yellow ball, for juniors over 10 years of age, will immediately follow from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

The Red Ball format allows modified match play with modified nets, balls and scoring.

The Yellow Ball sessions allows fun match play while playing to some great tunes.

White is also offering cardio tennis for those aged 16 years and over. These sessions will also be held on Thursday evenings, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm and do not require any tennis experience.

As it is not a match play format, it is regarded as a fun way to play tennis with a bonus of getting your heart rate up and being a great form of exercise.

Yellow Ball will continue in Term four, alongside the Green Ball program, for juniors aged over 10 years.

These will also be 60-minute sessions held on from 5.45pm to 6.45pm.

The eight-week program is suited to players who can confidently hit forehand and backhand as well as serve.

Orange Ball for intermediate players aged 8 to 10 years, will be held from 4.45pm to 5.45pm.

Intermediate players are required to have some basic tennis skills to be eligible for this group.

Meanwhile, the popular HotShots program will return this season.

Open to children aged 5 to 8 years, no experience is required to be eligible. The 45-minute sessions will start at 4pm to 4.45pm.

The eight-week clinics will be held Thursdays, commencing October 17 and concluding December 5.

For more advanced players, the Southern Ports Tennis Association will commence its junior competition on October 19.

A junior selection day will be held on October 10. The team consists of six mixed boys and girls in order of merit. To be eligible, players must be able to have a short rally and successfully get a few serves in.

All players play a double and single matches and compete against Lucindale, Naracoorte and Kingston.

Junior competitions are held Saturday mornings from 9am to 11am.

The Southern Ports Tennis Association season is held from October to March, with this year’s junior season starting on October 19 to December 9, returning after the Christmas/New Year break on February 3, 2025. Grand finals will be held on March 2.
