Racing returns to penola

Giddy up for the annual DiGiorgio Family Wines Penola Cup this Sunday at the Penola Racecourse, which will be a great day out for the whole family.

Gates will open at 11am and an exciting eight-race program will take place, including the Cup.

There will be lots of free kids activities, including running races up the track, giant dominoes and giant Jenga, a jumping castle, face glitter tattoos, totem tennis and a special visit from Easter Bunny.

Secretary of the Penola Racing Club Belinda Holland said last year was a big event and it was a beautiful day, so they were hoping for great weather again this year.

The bars will be fully stocked, Finn’s Fine Food will cater and TAB facilities will be available.

DiGiorgio Family Wines are the major wine sponsor for the Penola Racing Club so their fine wines will be available to enjoy throughout the day.

DiGiorgio sales and events manager Katie Lewis said the Penola Racing Club was an important community organisation run by volunteers who do a fantastic job.

“It’s a great meeting place for locals and brings visitors into the town as well and we’re all about supporting our local community,” Lewis said.

“We get a lot of support from our local community and we like to give back as well.

“It’s a family day, everyone’s encouraged to bring their kids along and just get together and offer each other support and having a bit of a fun day out is really important in regional communities.”

Fans will be treated to eight races with the main event capturing everyone’s imagination straight away.

The 2022 DiGiorgio Family Wines Penola Cup is the opening race on the card with the owners of the first horse to complete the 1700m journey getting a lovely $15,825 prize purse.

Seven other races held across a variety of journeys from 1100m to 1600m are all offering $8025 for the winner.

Nominations were not available at the time of print.

General Admission tickets are $20, concession $10, kids enter free and dining room packages are available for $150 per head.

The dining room package includes race day entry, a three course meal, reserved seating, a complimentary race book and an alcohol package from 1pm until 5pm.

A free shuttle bus will run from Penola to the racecourse and back.

Tickets are available via Moshtix or the Country Racing SA website.
