Railway discovery

An interesting insight into a railwayman’s life has recently surfaced at the Millicent train station.

It has been the base for the Millicent community radio station for over 30 years but it retains many of its original fittings and furniture.

Written on the base of a desk drawer were the service details of late station clerk Leon Day.

He joined the South Australian Railways at Millicent in his teens in 1942 and retired in 1985.

During those 43 years, the narrow gauge was converted to broad gauge, the line to Beachport was closed and the State Government sold the railways to the Federal Government.

Mr Day died in Millicent in 2010 at the age of 84.

His father and brother were also long-serving employees of the railways.

Meanwhile, the original railway bench seat and station master’s desk at the station have been lovingly restored and reinstalled at the station.

Volunteers undertook the work and a local store donated the undercoat and other consumables.
