Recreation centre progress made

Work is well under way on Mount Gambier’s new recreation hub complex, being built on Margaret Street.

The Aquatic Centre building at Olympic Park is being demolished to make way for the construction of the Mount Gambier Community and Recreation Hub.

Mount Gambier City Council Infrastructure General Manager Nick Serle said head contractor for the project – BADGE Constructions – was currently working on the structure, including footings.

“A portion of the building will be erected in the coming weeks as the team work on the first-floor concrete slab,” he said. “This is an exciting step and quite a visible milestone as we’ll see the spine of the two-story building going up and it will really begin to showcase just how expansive the building will be.”

Mr Serle said the installation of the sewer connection line would occur at the end of January and would require excavation through the Olympic Park car park to the hub site compound.

The refurbishment of the existing outdoor 50-metre pool has also started.

Fencing surrounds the building site, but time-lapse photography is recording the evolution of the project as the build progresses.

“Work on site is progressing quickly and we encourage the community to go online and view the time-lapse photos of the build which are updated every 15 minutes,” Mr Serle said.
