Red Cross lends helping hand during lockdown

Red Cross continued to support those in need across the Limestone Coast during last week’s 72-hour COVID-related lockdown.

Volunteers and Red Cross staff undertook medical transport, the delivery of food and pharmaceuticals to vulnerable clients as well as taking clients to Foodbank and delivering food in partnership with the Salvos.

Red Cross Limestone Coast regional manager David Walshaw said TeleCross services of daily welfare check phone calls also continued as normal.

“We also had the situation of a burst of hot weather,” Mr Walshaw said.

“Due to the stay-at-home order, vulnerable people could not go to air-conditioned places like libraries and shopping centres to cool down.

“As a result, Red Cross stepped up its welfare checks on those people.”

Mr Walshaw said some social outings like bus trips organised by Red Cross were currently curtailed due to social distancing protocols “If assistance is required during this period please ring the Red Cross office in Mount Gambier on 8725 3622 to see if we can assist you at this time.

“As always, thanks go to our volunteers who were on the road as essential workers during the lock-down period ensuring the most vulnerable in our community were not overlooked.”
