Millicent’s greatest racehorse features again on the South Australian racing program for the next calendar year.
The $100,000 Redelva Stakes will be run at Morphettville in suburban Adelaide on April 12.
It is for horses aged three-years-old and is run under set weights and penalty conditions.
Several years ago, the Millicent Cup luncheon in the members’ dining room was renamed the Redelva Luncheon in honour of the SA Racing Hall of Famer.
Trained by Greg Varcoe at Millicent in partnership with fellow farmers Reg Holloway and Bill Walter, Redelva won 21 of his 61 starts and almost $1.8m in stake money.
Racing from a two-year-old until the age of nine, Redelva continually took on the best sprinters in the nation and achieved numerous Group One successes.
Dual Melbourne Cup-winning jockey John Letts won eight races on Redelva.
The next Millicent Cup will be run on May 25, 2025 at the Allan Scott Mount Gambier Racecourse.
Run over 2050m, it boasts a total prize pool of $31,800 and is run under quality handicap conditions.
Among the other Cups on offer in 2025 are the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup (January 17), Penola Cup (April 12) and the Mount Gambier Cup (March 21).
A major change is the shifting of the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup from a Thursday to a Friday.
Held at the picturesque Penola Racecourse, the Coonawarra Vignerons Cup is one of the major tourist drawcards to the region.
Each year, the Coonawarra Vignerons hosts a premium trackside marquee, welcoming over 600 guests from all parts of Australia to enjoy a fully catered day out featuring gourmet food offerings with a smorgasbord of Coonawarra premium wines, live entertainment and thoroughbred racing action.
The Marquee event is known as one of the most extravagant race day events in South Australia, starting with a sparkling breakfast and continuing on for a day full of food, fashion and fun, with a live imperial wine auction a highlight of the day.
