Rediscovered letter offers glimpse into past

An insight into civic life in Millicent in the 1990s has recently been revealed.

Wattle Range Mayor Des Noll opened a sealed envelope and read a letter which was penned around 27 years ago by one of his predecessors.

The last Mayor of Millicent Jim Van Schaik (now deceased) wrote the letter addressed to the future Mayor and placed it in a time capsule in 1995 when Millicent was marking its 125th anniversary.

The envelope was opened recently in the Bruce Towers History Room at the Millicent Public Library by Mayor Noll with Jim’s widow Mary Van Schaik and 25 others in attendance.

In his letter, Mr Van Schaik noted the economic challenges facing Millicent and the need for more employment-generating enterprises.

Millicent National Trust committee member and South East Family History Group president Noel Boyle was the master of ceremonies for the historic occasion and it was followed by morning tea.
