Region’s best pad up for cup

Some of the South East’s top cricketers travelled to Adelaide to compete in the SACA Senior Country Cup last week.

The team comprised players from the Mount Gambier and District Association, Millicent and Naracoorte Association and the Tatiara District Association with the side captained by East Gambier’s Alex Hentschke.

The team played three games in their pool on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, finishing with two wins and a loss.

They took on Northern in their opening match and came away with a thrilling win after making 195 before holding off Northern in the final over.

On Tuesday the side took on Alice Springs and suffered a tough loss where they struggled to take many wickets.

The side redeemed itself on Wednesday as they faced Murray District/Barrier and came away with a hard fought win.

Penola’s Michael Waters had a big game with the ball, taking five wickets.

The South East finished second in their pool and on Thursday faced off in a Pool A 2nd v Pool B 2nd match up which saw them taking on Fleurieu and District.

The team batted well, managing to chase down their opponent’s total of 285 in six less overs.

The big performance came off the back of West Gambier’s Justin de Jong who made 119.

Captain Hentschke said the side had a good week with many of the players stepping up and having big games.

“Michael Waters was the standout with the ball taking eight wickets,” he said.

“Jack Miller was luckless with the ball but bowled well all week.

“Tom Moyle-Read won wicket keeper of the carnival and both he and Michael were named in the team of the carnival.

“Batting was an even spread until the Thursday when Justin de Jong made 119 and Jack Mullan made 73 to finish off the carnival well.”

Hentschke said the best part of the carnival was the match against Fleurieu and District, and matching their huge score on the final day.

“The highlight was chasing down 285 on Thursday and having an opening partnership of 166,” he said.
