Some of the region’s top tennis players went head-to-head in Lucindale for the hotly contested Baker and Ey Shields on Saturday.
The Mount Gambier and District Tennis Association contested the shield against Southern Ports Tennis Association at the Lucindale Country Club’s grass courts.
Each division featured 16 players, comprising eight men and eight women on each side.
Each player played three sets on the day, a singles, doubles and mixed doubles match with the singles being played to six games and the doubles to nine.
The Baker competition featured some competitive and close matches as Mount Gambier’s Jace Maxwell and Jorja Douglas had a tight contest against Southern Ports’ Tom McKinnon and Lisa Hall.
McKinnon and Hall were able to pull away with the set, winning 9-7.
Maxwell and McKinnon had another close battle in the singles, with the Southern Ports player getting the set once again with the match ending in a tie breaker.
The singles portion of the day featured a few more close matches, including between Southern Ports’ Bianca Lawrie and Mount Gambier’s Ashlea Dunn.
Lawrie was able to take another set for Southern Ports, defeating Dunn 7-5.
Back on the men’s side Mount Gambier’s George White was able to pick up a set as he took on Southern Ports’ Daniel Hackwill and won 7-5.
It was tough for Mount Gambier in the doubles, as they only claimed one set which came in the men’s top doubles with Mount Gambier’s Andrew van den Hurk and Dylan Childs taking on Southern Ports’ James Crossing and Egan Regnier.
Childs and van den Hurk claimed the set 9-6.

Southern Ports came out on top in the Baker Shield, winning 22-10.
It was another tough day for Mount Gambier in the Ey Shield as they struggled to win many sets.
Mount Gambier was able to claim just a single set in the mixed doubles, with Brendan McInnes and Lizzie Doyle up against Southern Ports’ Duncan Ogilvie and Allana Mueller.
It was a tight contest with McInnes and Doyle winning 9-7.
The singles featured numerous close matches across the board with the clash between Mount Gambier’s Tim Biggins and Southern Ports’ Noah Lang ending in a tiebreaker with Biggins getting the set.
Mount Gambier only picked up one set in the doubles, having to work for it as Sam Auld and Tyler Hannigan faced Southern Ports’ Paul Rains and Jack Grundy.
Auld and Hannigan were able to claim the set in a 9-7 effort.
Southern Ports completed the clean sweep as they won the Ey Shield 25-7.
In local tennis the Division 3 competition was contested with some competitive scores.
Mil Lel got the win over Uniting to help hold top spot on the ladder, with the final score being 7-5.
In the other match Suttontown took on Centrals/Mount Schank with the combined side taking the win 7-5.
In ladies doubles West Gambier had a 4-2 win over Mil Lel White, while Glencoe took on Mount Schank and won 6-0.
Glencoe got the win over Suttontown in mixed doubles, getting the job done 4-2.
Mount Gambier Green had a great win over Moorak Gray, winning 5-1.
Mount Schank and Uniting/Glencoe had a close battle as Mount Schank claimed the win over the first placed side, winning on games 25-24.
Mount Gambier Blue had a big win over Moorak Green, victorious 5-1.
