Residential tutor re-appointed

Former Tenison Woods College 2019 co-captain James Lucas (pictured) has been re-appointed as a residential tutor for the 2022 academic year at the University Hall at Flinders University.

James, who is from Millicent, will enter his third and final year in the Bachelor of Paramedic Science degree at Flinders University. James is one of 10 residential tutors appointed by the university following a competitive recruitment process.

Residential tutors work with a designated group of students and facilitate the development of an inclusive and caring community. This is beneficial for their academic, personal and social development.

“Serving as a tutor this year has enabled me to give something back to the hall,” James said.

“Just knowing that you have helped a first-year student find their feet in their new home and get a good start on their academic journey is so rewarding.”

James said he enjoyed participating in all the sport on offer at the hall during his past two years at Flinders.

“It’s been a fantastic way to meet and make so many friends,” James said.

“I’d highly recommend the hall experience for any student coming to Flinders, especially directly from high school.”

To prepare residential tutors for their important role, they receive comprehensive pre-service and in-service training. This includes First Aid, Mental Health First Aid, first responder and critical incident management skills, leadership, community building and student development theory, Indigenous cultural awareness and working with students on the autism spectrum.

Flinders Living Principal James Atkinson said he was pleased to have James return for a second year as a residential tutor.

“James is living proof that if you get in and give everything on offer a go, you’ll make so many new friends, extend your boundaries and gain some great leadership experience and skills, all of which are transferrable to later life,” Mr Atkinson said.
