RFDS calls for helping hand

The Royal Flying Doctor Service is a familiar sight, flying into the South East an average of twice a day.

Many lives have been saved, premature babies making it into the world alive, and heart attack victims and accident victims whisked away for life-saving surgery, to name a few of the tasks facing the RFDS crew every day.

The RFDS has a hard-working Support Group based in Mount Gambier and president Bill Russon said over the past two years it had raised more than $70,000 each year, which was forwarded to head office to help pay for the purchase and outfitting of the planes.

“In addition, sufficient money was also raised locally with great corporate support to purchase and outfit a hangar at the Mount Gambier Airport for the Patient Transfer Facility three years ago, which is such a boon to the comfort, stabilisation and care of patients awaiting the arrival of the planes,” he said.

“The support group is run by a dedicated and hard-working group of enthusiastic supporters, who, after several years, are looking to refresh the working group with a new infusion of members.

“Several of the committee members have served for many years, and with an ageing demographic are looking to ease away from committee positions.

“The group is hoping to attract new life into the group and eventually see newcomers take on some of the committee positions.”

Mr Russon said current members found it very satisfying to volunteer their time at the many events organised for fundraising, and their Facebook page attracted willing volunteers to help at functions, especially the Bunning sausage sizzles.

“However, the current group would love to see some new faces at meetings, which are held on the second Wednesday of every month in the Masonic Lodge rooms on Helen Street at 5pm,” he said.

“So, if you want a rewarding challenge, have benefitted from the RFDS service or are looking to get involved in the charity voted the most trusted by South Australians for the past five years, come along and join the group.”
