Rivals face off for golden ticket

Senior Men

International v Gambier Centrals

Gambier Centrals will take on International on Sunday at Casadio Park in the Barry Maney Group Limestone Coast Premier League qualifying final.

Inter has taken care of Centrals in the three contests these sides have had this season, with the last two being much more competitive than the first.

Inter should be heading into this game with fresh legs and confidence, as the black and blue are coming off the bye as well as having home field advantage.

Centrals on the other hand will be looking to continue their great play after an important win over Blue Lake which sent them into the qualifying final.

Centrals are currently on a three-game winning streak, with their last loss coming from Inter back in round 11 when they went down 5-3.

Centrals club president Shane Dycer believes the team will have to be at its best on Sunday if The Lions are to have a chance of getting the win.

“To me, Inter have been the benchmark all season,” he said.

“We were very competitive with them the last two times we have played and we’re going to have to be at our best defensively.

“Matt Bueti, Sam Bueti and Christian Cella are very relentless and if you give them any room they will punish you.

“But on the other hand I think Sam Shoemark, Alex Obedi, Jake Blackwell and Lewis March for us going forward means Inter will have their hands full as well, so hopefully we play our best because that’s what it’s going to take to win the game.

“We consider this a free hit because we have not been in the top two all season until the end, so we get two bites of making a grand final and we will take it from there.”

Blue Lake v Apollo

Blue Lake will take on Apollo at Malseed Park on Sunday in the elimination final.

These sides have played three times this season with Blue Lake winning the season series, taking the three points in the last two meetings with both sides sharing the points in the first match up.

Blue Lake is coming off a tough 2-1 loss to Gambier Centrals last week which resulted in them falling out of the top two and subsequently facing elimination.

Meanwhile, Apollo had a confidence boosting big win over Naracoorte last week to end the home and away season on a high.

Two big players in this match will be Blue Lake’s Shar Nay Than and Apollo’s Billy Pearce.

Both of these players have been reliable goal scorers all season and will be key pieces in their side’s success this week.

This will be a highly competitive game – just like the other meetings these sides have had – and Blue Lake will definitely have a bit of an advantage with the game being played at Malseed Park.

ELIMINATION LOOMING: Millicent will face Gambier Centrals on Saturday with no margin for error as the loser will be eliminated from the finals.

Senior Women

Millicent United
v Gambier Centrals

Millicent United will take on Gambier Centrals at Apollo on Saturday in the Senior Women’s elimination final.

Centrals have struggled against Millicent this season, unable to find a win in each encounter.

Last week Millicent United scraped by with a close 4-3 win over International, whereas Gambier Centrals fell to Blue Lake 3-0.

Although Centrals have not beaten Millicent yet this season they will still be very confident as they are the only side to have defeated Apollo.

A key player in that game was Jasmine Siemon who provided a lot of great runs on the wing and also scored a crucial goal.

She will once again play a big role in this game if Centrals want to win.

Millicent will need Lana Shepherd to step up big in this game.

Shepherd has had a phenomenal season for Millicent as has been a key goal scorer all year.

She is coming off a hat-trick performance last week and will be looking to keep the momentum going in this game.

Apollo v Blue Lake

Apollo will host Blue Lake in the qualifying final on Saturday, with both sides coming off good wins last week where they kept clean sheets.

These sides have had some pretty competitive contests this season with Apollo winning twice and Blue Lake sharing points from Apollo in the last meeting with a 1-1 draw.

Both sides have been dominant all season and had the same results in their last five games with three wins, one draw and one loss.

Although Apollo has been on a different level than everyone else all season, the Rangers will like their chances going into this game after finding a weakness in Apollo’s armour in the draw and also seeing it is possible for them to lose.

Blue Lake’s Chelsea Frost will have to be at her best in this game as she has been vital for the side all season with some elite performances.

Frost is coming off a hat-trick performance last week against Centrals, so she has definitely found her form at the perfect time.

Apollo’s Deni Atkin and Toni Ingley-Smith will have to continue their great play in this game too.

All season they have been a dual threat for Apollo and have been causing havoc for a lot of teams with their goal scoring abilities.
