Robe hits ground with point to prove

An unhappy Robe outfit took out their frustrations on the home team at Mount Burr on Saturday in the Mid South East Football League match of the day.

Just ahead of the round seven clash, the Roosters learned the MSEFL executive committee had issued them with a suspended $1000 fine for a team sheet error in the round two match against Glencoe.

The seasiders had already copped a loss of premiership points and score for that error.

With this latest punishment no doubt in mind, the red and whites were determined to show why they have been the competition pacesetter in 2024.

Coming into the match, Mount Burr had only lost one game and had the home ground advantage.

These benefits counted for little as the victors slammed on 6.1 to only two goals in the opening term.

Three of those goals came from the boot of Hamish Smith.

He finished the day with 10 and he leads the MSEFL goalies in 2024 with 29 majors.

Robe took a 25-point lead into the first change and increased it at every break.

Their use of the ball was first-class and they made full use of any turnovers.

Mount Burr did not have the same number of experienced and bigger-bodied players as their opponents and this was reflected on the scoreboard.

The seasiders welcomed back coach Nathan Brown from the injured list.

The MAC trophy for best on ground went to Robe utility player George Dutton and was chosen by field umpires Malcolm Tuckfield, Barry Nilsson and Adam Gilbert.

In round eight, Mount Burr travels to Tigerland for a cross-town clash with Tantanoola.

Robe hosts undefeated Hatherleigh which has the biggest following in the Mid SE.

There is plenty of speculation across the region that this could be last time ever that Hatherleigh plays at Robe ahead of a competition restructure in 2025.

The Eagles have paid a yearly visit to the seaside for almost 60 years but that would cease if they were to be lured to the new Limestone Coast Football Netball League.

Glencoe 19.14 defeated Nangwarry 5.6

The result was never in doubt after half time as Glencoe retained the Phil Muhovics Memorial Trophy at home at the expense of Nangwarry by 92 points.

The same game last year had the Murphies defeating the Saints by 90 points.

The sizeable victory along with the four premiership points from the round two team sheet saga against Robe means Glencoe has climbed to a season high ranking of third.

Nangwarry remains at the foot of the ladder without a win.

Presented by his brothers, the Phil Muhovics Trophy honours the memory of the coach of the Saints in their first three premierships in 1993, 1994 and 1997 and it has never been won by Nangwarry.

The Phil Muhovics Memorial Medal for best-on-ground was awarded to Glencoe’s Brodie Glynn while the MAC Medal went to his skipper Dylan Childs.

Both awards were chosen by field umpires Nick McBride, Brett Watson and Scott Chuck.

McBride is the independent Member for MacKillop and he joined the MSEFL umpires panel this season.

He does not accept payment for his umpiring services.

A sombre aspect at the ground were gestures to honour the memory of Nangwarry player Dylan Podobnik who lost his life in a workplace
 incident midweek.

Glencoe travels down the Mile Hill Road and competes at the Bay against Port MacDonnell in round eight while Nangwarry is playing at Kongorong.

Kalangadoo 18.16 defeated Kongorong 5.7.

Kalangadoo has turned its season around and Kongorong became its third consecutive victim with victory by a hefty margin of 87 points.

The Magpies have a long way to go to achieve a hattrick of flags to go with the three-peats of 1950-52 and 1982-84.

The reigning premiers are sitting in fifth place and are one of the teams disadvantaged by the four additional premiership points handed to Glencoe due to the round two team sheet
 saga.

Young Kalangadoo forward Connor Gentile booted five goals on his home deck and took his season’s tally to 25.

The Hawks did not have such a target.

Owing to their scheduled bye and the break for interleague in Mount Gambier over the King’s Birthday holiday long weekend, the Magpies can enjoy a three-week break.

Kalangadoo’s next match is at Nangwarry on June 15.

The Hawks host the Saints on Saturday.

Port MacDonnell 19.25 defeated Tantanoola 10.5

Port MacDonnell banked some valuable percentage with a 74-point win at the Bay over Tantanoola.

On a tough day for forwards in losing teams, the Tigers were the only vanquished team to post a double figure number of goals.

At the other end of the oval, Colby Munro booted five goals and this was one less than teammate Christian Howlett.

Tantanoola hosts Mount Burr in round eight while Port MacDonnell is home to Glencoe.
