Rock lobster closures set to remain

Southern Zone lobster fishing closures took effect from Tuesday and will remain in place until October 1.

For the professional sector, most boats have been out of the water for several weeks as more than 95% of the quota has been caught.

Fisheries Officers will still be conducting patrols in South East waters, with the owners of any pots located still in the water running the risk of being fined and/or having their pots confiscated

Anyone wishing to report suspected illegal fishing activity can do so by contacting FISHWATCH on 1800 065 522.

Callers can choose to remain anonymous.

Industry figures have told The SE Voice of their hopes the new Federal Labor Government will strengthen trade ties with China and the lucrative export market can be re-established after a break of more than two years.

The 2021-2022 season for commercial fishers in the Southern Zone lobster fishery had started two weeks earlier than usual on September 15.

The temporary management arrangement was aimed at assisting fishers to get product on shelf in time for this year’s mid-Autumn ‘Moon Cake’ festival and China National Day celebrations.

However, the seasonal fishing closure for recreational fishers in the Southern Zone remained in place.
