Roll up to keep community connected

Red Cross is looking for volunteers in Millicent, Robe, Kingston, Bordertown and Naracoorte as the demand increases for client transport across the Limestone Coast region.

Community support officer Belinda Anderson explained the need for drivers to take clients to appointments and social outings remained vital when friends and family may be unable to visit or assist with these duties due to current COVID-related state restrictions.

‘‘Clients’ needs are expanding beyond attending medical appointments,” Ms Anderson said.

“We are finding that clients are wanting to engage in more social activities and assistance to complete daily tasks such as going shopping.”

Red Cross requires potential volunteers to undertake a National Police Check and obtain a Working with Children Check.

Volunteers will also become an accredited driver through the State Government’s VDAP program.

‘‘Due to very recent changes, volunteers will need to be fully COVID vaccinated to comply with the statutory requirements placed on our programs by the Federal Government,” Ms Anderson said.

Ms Anderson said giving back to the community can be very rewarding.

‘‘Vehicles are supplied and volunteers will be trained and supported,” she said.

“Volunteers may like to assist often or for a few hours at a time.

“We would love to be able to have your driving skills and appreciate every trip you may be able to assist in order to help another community member in need.”

Volunteers will be supported to navigate the required clearances to successfully be onboarded.

Anyone interested in signing on can contact Ms Anderson at the Red Cross office in Mount Gambier on 8725 3622.
