The Millicent War Memorial Civic and Arts Centre has now been closed to the public ahead of a full roof restoration costing $800,000.
It is not expected to be reopened until the end of April.
Whilst repairing the leaking roof will alleviate ongoing remediation costs, the building will also receive somewhat of a ‘facelift’ with the front façade being updated, significantly improving its overall amenity.
This important asset renewal project has been made possible by funding from the Federal Government’s Special Local Road Community Infrastructure Program.
A Wattle Range Council spokesperson said it is working to assist community groups and organisations with bookings to relocate where possible.
“We acknowledge and apologise for any inconvenience caused; however, this essential work is required to ensure that this important asset remains available to the community many years into the future,” the spokesperson said.
A confidential section of the special Wattle Range Council meeting on September 24 decided to accept the roof restoration tender of Mules Plumbing for the GST exclusive price of $706,000.
The leaking roof has been troublesome for some time and significantly disrupted the 2023 Millicent High School speech night following a downpour.
The final event prior to its temporary closure was a sit-down dinner on November 7 to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Millicent.
