West Gambier took on North Gambier at Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday in the elimination final, with the Roos coming away with the victory after a dominant fourth quarter.
The opening quarter was fairly even and low scoring as both sides shared time with the ball.
The Tigers had chances to put some scoreboard pressure on the Roovs but struggled in front of goals as they came away with three minor scores.
The Roos on the other hand were just slightly better as they finished the quarter on top after putting a major and a minor score on the board.
Going into the second term with a four point lead the Roos continued to add to their buffer.
West had a lot more scoring opportunities in the second term but could not convert on all of them as they only kicked two goals.
The Tigers finally got the ball rolling in the second term as they finished the quarter with just one goal.
Despite the slow start North were still in the game as they headed into half time only trailing by 15 points.
In the third term the Tigers worked their way back into the game as they scored four goals in the quarter with just one minor score as well.
However the Roos remained just out in front as they once again had countless scoring opportunities in the term.
West finished the quarter with two goals and four points which had them in the driver’s seat heading into the final term.
Only trailing by a goal going into the final quarter, the Tigers looked to build off the success they had in the previous quarter.
However, try as they might the Tigers could not come up with another big quarter as they struggled in the fourth.
North had their chances but could not come up with any major scores, while West sealed the victory in the fourth with a huge quarter.
Kicking four goals in the final term helped seal the 27 point victory over the Tigers and gave West a shot of making the grand final as they will wait to see who they will face in the prelim final next weekend.
It was an all around great team performance from the Roos with everyone stepping up, especially Braiden Ousey who finished as the side’s best while Brandon Newton continued to lead his side in the forward line, kicking three goals.
Another standout for the Roos was young gun Brooklyn Winterfield who kicked two dagger goals in the fourth to help seal the victory.
West Gambier coach Daron McElroy was pleased with his side’s performance in the win.
“I thought we were pretty good to be honest, we had most of the footy but we did not put it on the board as much as we would have liked too,” he said.
Defensively we played well when we did not have the wind so overall I was pretty happy.”
McElroy said he was impressed with the performances of many players across the field.
“I thought Andrew Stone was very good with running up and down the ground, he just looked faster than everyone and big Braiden Ousey
did a lot of power work in the ruck,” he said.
“Brandon Newton was pretty handy down forward, he was a pretty hard matchup for the opposition and I also thought Michael Minuzzo was pretty good throughout the day.”
West Gambier will now play either Millicent or South Gambier in the preliminary final, with the Saints and the Demons to face off in the qualifying final this weekend at Malseed Park.
West Gambier defeated North Gambier 9.10 (64) to 5.7 (37).
