South Gambier v West Gambier
Anail-biter occurred at Blue Lake Sports Park with the young South Gambier taking it right up to second placed West Gambier in a match decided by less than a goal.
The final score had South Gambier 70 (10.10) going down to West Gambier 74 (11.8).
The first quarter saw West Gambier off to a strong start, kicking four goals to South Gambier’s two, with the sides separated by 12 points at quarter time.
The second quarter had South Gambier claw its way back to making it a one goal game.
Some improved play allowed the Demons to outscore West Gambier in the second term kicking 3.1 (19) to West Gambier’s 2.1(13).
At half time, West Gambier held a narrow lead with a score of 41, while South Gambier trailed closely on 35.
With the game hanging firmly in the balance the third quarter shaped up to be an incredibly important quarter of football for both sides.
In the third quarter West Gambier extended its lead further, adding 20 points to finish the quarter 9.7 (61).
South Gambier fought hard, however West Gambier’s defence was strong and managed to intercept most attacking movement.
South Gambier had two scoring opportunities which it converted to keep in touch with West Gambier.
Heading into the final quarter, West Gambier held a comfortable advantage of 14 points.
However, South Gambier showcased plenty of fighting spirit and mounted a comeback.
It was an intense battle with the Demons giving it everything the young side had.
South Gambier managed to get within a goal, however the side ran out of time to complete the comeback.
West Gambier managed to hold on to the lead and secure the victory with a final score of 74 points (11.8), to South Gambier’s 70 (10.10).
Some inaccurate kicking in the final quarter proved costly for the young side who looked to complete an impressive comeback.
For South Gambier, Mitchell Sims, Ethan Chuck and Ryan Kuhl made valuable contributions to their side’s comeback in the final quarter and were named in the best players.
Alex Pearson, Thomas Holmes, Landon Lefever, Brody Virgo, Kyle Giddings and Jesse Pfitzner were the best for West Gambier helping the side to hang on and secure the four points.
Brody Virgo also had a standout performance, contributing three goals to West Gambier’s total.
On the other hand, South Gambier’s Jordan Williams was the highest goal-scorer for his team, contributing two goals.
Thomas Holmes also had a notable game, scoring two goals as well.
