Rotary Global scholarship boosts international study

Former Mount Gambier student Evangelia Wichmann (pictured) is currently undertaking a Masters Degree at the prestigious London School of Economics (LSE), thanks to help from a US$30,000 (AU$44,500) Rotary Global Grant Scholarship.

Her local sponsor is the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, while her host sponsor in the UK is the Rotary Club of London.

Evangelia aims to attain a Master of Science in International Political Economy from the LSE, which she hopes to use to address global issues such as migration driven by climate change and economic inequality, especially for women.

She is planning to eventually gain a PhD (Doctorate) which will give her the credentials to shape policy at international organisations dealing with these issues.

Evangelia already has an impressive list of achievements to her name, including being School Captain at Tenison Woods College in 2018, then being elected President of Queens College at the University of Melbourne in 2022 while studying international languages and politics.

During her final year at school, she led a range of events to raise over $13,000 for homeless people and jointly organised a hospital fundraiser for bowel cancer awareness.

While at University, Evangelia won a number of awards which allowed her to spend time in New Caledonia and Thailand.

She also spent time as an intern at think-tanks, AsiaLink and the Australian Institute of International Affairs in order to build her expertise and knowledge in global trade, investment and diplomacy.

During her Queens College Presidency, Evangelia developed a student sex education program in response to concerns about the number of sexual assault cases being reported.

More recently, thanks to a scholarship, she volunteered to teach English and help set up water filtration projects for Myanmar refugees at Phop Phra in Thailand.

Evangelia recently spent time in Mount Gambier to visit with her family and catch up with friends.
