Rotary supports region’s animals

The Lakes Rotary and West Gambier Rotary recently donated $1500 to the South East Animal Welfare League following the profits of their City of Mount Gambier Australia Day breakfast.

The profits of the breakfast have been donated to a local charity each year for over 20 years including the Foodbank SA Limestone Coast branch, Sunset Community Kitchen, ac.care, Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group and the Limestone Coast Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Local businesses who contributed included She’s Apples, Collin’s Court Butchers, Baker’s Delight Commercial Street East and Splendid Eggs.

For a fee, each attendee got a fruit box, a plate of fruit and toast, eggs, bacon and a sausage with around 300 people served.

“It was very well received and they were very thankful that it would go towards running the place and ongoing costs due to lack of funding, so the little bit that we gave was going to be a great help,” Lakes Rotary member Colleen James said.

“That Australia Day breakfast is a huge affair and we sometimes need extra hands and West Gambier members came along and helped us out and we do that quite a bit – helping each other out.

“By doing it at that breakfast time, people can still go and have their Aussie Day barbecue lunch.

“This is one of only many projects that we do for the community.”

Ms James said the Lakes Rotary Club are looking for new members.

“New members are welcome with new ideas and expertise to try and make a difference in our local community,” she said.

“For any prospective new members, it is not necessarily just cooking barbecues all the time, there is a lot of other things we do like running the science and engineering contest each year, putting on the fun run which is a major event now and running a lot of other little things around town that do not require someone to cook a barbecue.

“All people that put their hands up of any age are very well received.”
