Runners set to step off the beaten track

Almost 300 avid runners will take on the famous Tower Trail Run this Sunday, journeying along lush trails some of Mount Gambier’s most well known landmarks.

There is something for everyone with course distances of 5km, 10km, 21km half marathon and 56km ultramarathon.

Depending on the course, competitors pass the namesake Centenary Tower, the Leg of Mutton Lake, Adam Lindsay Gordon Monument and the Blue Lake.

Tower Trail Run event director Phil Ackland officially founded the Tower Trail Run in 2016 with the 2020 event cancelled due to COVID and the 2022 event restructured due to the Crater Lakes fire.

Participants attend from locally, intrastate and interstate with the event the second of five in the SA Five 50 Ultra Series.

“There is one that is close to Victor Harbor, one that is close to Murray Bridge, the other two are in the Adelaide Hills and then to do the series you have to travel the 500km out to come and see us so that has been good in terms of getting that attention and getting tourists into town,” Mr Ackland said.

“We get feedback from the people who are from out of town, particularly the ones that are here for the first time are amazed and taken aback by some of the scenery and the iconic landscape that is there.

“In terms of spectators and supporters and just interested people wanting to see what it is about and what is going on … it has got to be one of the best courses for doing that that you could come across anywhere.”

Some places spectators can watch from include Bay Road, the Valley Lakes carpark, Potters Point Lookout, Centenary Tower, Mark’s Lookout and the Adam Lindsay Gordon Monument.
