Gentle 10 knot winds greeted the sailors at Port MacDonnell for races 10, 11 and 12 of the season.
Having missed multiple races so far this season due to bad weather, race officer David Carlyle chose to have three short races rather than the usual two longer ones.
With the help of the committee boat driver Peter Seebohm, they set three very different courses to keep the skippers on their toes.
The first race was a triangle and a loop, race two was a loop and a triangle, and the last race was a loop in a different direction followed by a triangle.
Peter Douglas’ 145 dinghy ‘Em and the Boys’ was the first boat across the start line, followed by Sabre ‘Billy’ with Nick Watson on oard.
‘Em and the Boys’ used their good start to their advantage, but they were no match for the speed of Sonata racing yacht ‘Harmony’ who overtook them early in the race.
Don McLennan’s ‘Harmony’ held onto the lead to take line honours, followed by ‘Em and the Boys’.
The wind had picked up during the first race, with wind speeds now closer to 12 to 15 knots.
A few boats made changes to their sails to better accommodate the new conditions.
‘Billy’ got the best start in race two, with Dennis Illman’s Austral20 ‘Mirage’ close behind them.
‘Mirage’ had a close tussle all race with Tom Partridge’s Autral20 ‘Windy Fred’, with ‘Mirage’ winning that competition but not taking line honours.
Once more ‘Harmony’ was the first boat across the line and ‘Em and the Boys’ were close behind.
The sun had disappeared by the time the third and final race was to start.
Once more ‘Billy’ had a perfect start and ‘Harmony’ added a second across the start line to their tally for the day.
The two smaller boats showed the conditions were perfect for them in this race.
This time ‘Em and the Boys’ was able to take out line honours with ‘Billy’ the second boat to finish.
