Saints and Demons forge path to finals

West Gambier v South Gambier

South Gambier came away with a dominant win over the Roos on Saturday at Malseed Park in the weekend’s Bendigo Bank Limestone Coast Football Netball League hitout.

The Dees got off to a hot start in the opening quarter as they dominated the play.

South had seven scoring shots and converted on three of them while the Roos could only register a single goal with a few minor scores on the board.

After the opening term the Dees held a 13 point lead.

In the second term the Dees continued to add to their lead as they kicked another two goals.

West still had a small bit of hope in the second term as they got another goal on the board and headed into the change rooms trailing by 19 points.

The Roos’ hopes of a comeback soon disappeared in the third term as the Dees held them to a single point in the quarter while they put their foot on the pedal.

South added four goals to their total in the third term which gave them a comfortable 43 point lead heading into the final stanza.

In the fourth quarter the Roos finally found some success as they held the Dees to one major score.

West Gambier gave it their all in the final term as they kicked four goals in the quarter.

However the deficit was too much and their efforts were not enough to mount a comeback as they fell by 25 points at home.

South Gambier ruckman Mason Hein returned to the side and made a big impact in the midfield, finishing as the side’s best.

South Gambier defeated West Gambier 10.8 (68) to 6.7 (43).

Millicent v East Gambier

Millicent took care of business on Saturday, defeating East Gambier with ease at McLaughlin Park.

In the opening term the Saints wasted no time in taking control of the game as they kicked six goals while holding the Doggies to one minor score.

After a big opening quarter the Saints held a 36 point lead.

In the second quarter the goals kept coming as Millicent continued to run up the score before the end of the half.

The Saints kicked two goals while holding East to another one point quarter which helped the home team hold a 50 point lead at half time.

In the third quarter the Saints continued to build on their first half success as they kicked six goals while continuing to keep the Doggies goalless for another quarter, with their lead growing to 89.

In the fourth quarter the Saints had already done enough damage as they only scored a single goal but continued to control the game as they held the Doggies goalless for the entire game.

Millicent’s Kade Varcoe had a solid performance in the win as he finished as the side’s best.

Millicent defeated East Gambier 15.12 (102) to 0.5 (5).

Casterton Sandford v North Gambier

North Gambier headed to Casterton on Saturday and came away with a hard fought win over the Cats.

Both sides got away to great starts in the opening quarter with plenty of goals put on the board.

The Tigers slotted two while the Cats had many more scoring shots which helped them get three goals and the lead, heading to the first change up by nine.

The Cats kept their momentum heading into the second half as they began to pile on the goals, kicking five while the Tigers could only register two which did not help them heading into the half-time break to be down by 23.

After a poor first half the Tigers responded well in the third term and completely shut down the Cats, holding them to two points.

The Tigers on the other hand had a massive quarter, kicking three goals and bringing them closer heading into the deciding quarter.

Despite the goalless quarter the Cats still held a small six point lead.

The struggles continued for the Cats in the final term as they failed to kick a goal in another quarter as they only got a minor score on the board.

As the Tigers were dominating on one side of the field they kept it up on the other side as they kicked five majors to help seal the comeback victory.

North Gambier’s Aaron Dally had an all-round great performance for the Tigers, finishing as the team’s best as well as kicking two goals.

North Gambier defeated Casterton Sandford 12.11 (83) to 8.7 (55).
