Casterton Sandford v Millicent
It was a dominant performance for the Millicent Saints on Saturday as they got back to their winning ways with a big Limestone Coast Football Netball League victory over the Cats in Casterton.
It was a good start for the Saints in the opening quarter as they dominated the play and the scoreboard.
Millicent bagged three goals in the first term along with a few behinds while the Cats kicked just the one goal and three points.
After the opening term the Saints held a 13 point lead.
In the second quarter Millicent began to really put some distance between themselves and Casterton, holding the home side to just a single point.
Up the other end of the field the Saints continued to put goals on the board, kicking another three in the term, and at the half time break the Saints’ lead had grown to 34 points.
Coming out of the break the Cats showed a bit of fight as they improved their kicking as they added four much needed goals to their total.
However they struggled to stop the Saints who continued to keep the scoreboard ticking with another two goals.
Heading into the final term the Cats still had a bit of hope after they had cut the Saints’ lead down to 24 points.
The Cats continued to put some points on the board as two more goals were kicked in the last stanza.
Despite their efforts in the forward line the Cats continued to struggle in defence and they had no answer to Millicent who closed out the match strong with five goals to ultimately win by 43 points.
It was a big day for Jacob Carger as he kicked five goals while captain Finn Grimes had a dominant performance in the ruck.
Millicent defeated Casterton Sandford 13.16 (94) to 7.9 (51).
South Gambier v Penola
Penola’s winning streak continued on Saturday as they took down South Gambier in a thrilling contest coming off a very long bye.
It had been a while since the Dees saw the field with their last game being against the Cats back in mid May.
The lack of playing time showed early on as they got off to a slow start.
South started the match with just two goals in the opening term while the Eagles were slightly better with four.
Heading into the second term Penola held a 14 point lead.
The second quarter was another grind for both sides as very few goals were scored.
Both sides only added one goal each to the scoreboard with a couple of behinds as the Eagles went into half time with a 13 point lead.
The third term was again another tough grind for both sides as they shared possession for most of the quarter.
However that made for a really tough contest as the two teams went goalless in the quarter.
Heading into the final term it was still anyone’s game as Penola retained their 14 point lead.
Goal scoring returned in the final stanza as the Dees tried to make up for their slow start, kicking four goals.
However the Eagles were able to respond with timely goals which helped secure an important five point victory.
This makes it four straight wins for Penola and they are knocking on the door of the top four as the competition is extremely tight with four teams all on 16 points.
It was a big day out for Brodie Foster against his old club, kicking five goals.
Penola defeated South Gambier 7.10 (52) to 7.5 (47).
North Gambier v West Gambier
Reigning premiers West Gambier mounted a massive comeback against North Gambier on Saturday as the two sides went head to
head at Vansittart Park in a thrilling match.
Both sides started off a bit slow in the opening term and there was only a limited amount of goals scored.
The Tigers were able to gain a small lead, kicking two goals and holding the Roos scoreless to be up by 16 points at the first break.
North continued to build on their lead in the second while the Roos struggled once again.
Another two goal quarter from the Tigers helped build a 26 point lead as the Roos only scored three points.
After half time the Roos began their tough comeback and it started in the backline with the Tigers scoring just two points.
West finally hit the scoreboard in the third quarter as they kicked two goals which helped cut North’s lead to 13 points.
The Roos’ momentum continued to build in the final term as they stormed back into the match.
The Tigers tried their best to hold their once solid lead, kicking one goal in the quarter.
However it was not enough to compete with the Roos as a four goal quarter helped them complete a big comeback as well as securing top spot on the ladder.
West Gambier’s Jack Casey and Brody Virgo were crucial in the eight point victory, finishing as the side’s best.
West Gambier defeated North Gambier 6.10 (46) to 5.8 (38).
