Saints emerge as clear Limestone Coast Football premiership favourites

Round 14 of the Limestone Coast Football Netball League kicked off on the weekend with Millicent getting the upper hand over South Gambier, while West and North both enjoyed strong results on their home turf.

With just two minor round games remaining ahead of the inaugural LCFNL finals series, Millicent has sent a message to the competition by defeating the second place Demons, while North Gambier and West Gambier are still in contention for the double chance just one victory behind.

South Gambier v Millicent

The Saints headed to Blue Lake Sports Park on Saturday and came away with another outstanding win, defeating the Dees.

Both sides started well in the opening quarter, scoring numerous goals to kick off the game.

The Saints however got the edge over the Dees as they kicked four goals to South’s two in the opening quarter.

After the strong start the Saints held a 13 point lead.

The Dees responded well in the second term and shut down the Saints, after a big first term the Saints only managed one goal on the board which the Dees capitalised on.

South added two goals to their tally which helped cut the lead to nine points as the teams headed off the field at half time.

In the third term both sides were evenly matched as they found success in front of goal, with both kicking three majors which did not help the Dees take the lead, as they still trailed by nine points heading into the final stanza.

South struggled to build off its momentum from the third as they only managed one goal, while Milicent finished strong in the fourth quarter, kicking two goals to help seal the 13-point victory.

It was a milestone day for the Saints, as they had five sets for brothers playing in the A Grade side against South from the Bradley, Lang, Willis, Shanks and Werchon families.

Millicent defeated South Gambier 10.8 (68) to 8.7 (55).

TOUGH DAY: The Cats couldn’t get much going on Saturday as the Roos took care of business and came away with a 56-point victory.

West Gambier v Casterton

The Cats travelled across the border on Saturday to face the Roos at Malseed Park but could not come back with the win.

The Roos got off to a blazing start which stunned the Cats, with West kicking three goals whereas the Cats struggled, only getting a minor score on the board.

After the opening quarter the Cats trailed by 18 points.

Casterton finally got going in the second quarter as the momentum started to shift their way, adding two goals to the board while the Roos only managed one which helped cut the lead to 11 points at half time.

The Cats’ momentum dried up in the third term as they went goalless, while West had another three-goal quarter which helped them pull away from the Cats as their lead grew to 27 points heading into the final quarter.

Casterton still could not get anything going in the last term, only kicking one goal which was nowhere near enough to cut into the Roos’ lead as they finished strong and kicked six goals to seal the big victory.

West Gambier’s Brandon Newton had a huge game for the Roos, kicking six goals in the win.

West Gambier defeated Casterton Sandford 13.3 (81) to 3.7 (25).

North Gambier v East Gambier

The Tigers came up against the Doggies at Vansittart Park on Saturday and took care of business, picking up a huge win.

The Tigers were ready to play from the start as they wasted no time taking control of the game.

North kicked seven straight goals in the opening quarter while East only recorded two minor scores.

After a huge opening quarter the Tigers held a 40 point lead.

The Doggies finally got things going in the second as they had a solid quarter, kicking four goals.

However North still had a strong grip on the game as they added five goals in the stanza and at halftime the Tigers were miles in front with a 48 point lead.

In the third term the Doggies lost all their momentum from the previous quarter as they went goalless again.

North continued to add to their lead as they had another five goal quarter to bring their already huge lead to 77 points.

The Tigers finished strong as they kicked another three goals to close out the game and seal the 97 point victory.

In his debut game for the Tigers, Chad McLauglin had a brilliant performance, kicking four goals in the win.

North Gambier defeated East Gambier 20.6 (126) to 4.5 (29).
