Saints stalwart awarded

Long-serving Nangwarry Football Club president Shane Ploenges has had his efforts recognised and been nominated for the 2024 AFL National Volunteer of the Year.

His nomination sees him in the running for the national award which includes a three day once in a lifetime experience, attending the 2024 AFL Grand Final and participating in the AFL Grand Final parade.

“The club wishes Shane the very best in this award and is proud the countless hours and amazing efforts he has and continues to put in, have been recognised,” a club spokesman said.

Known as Plugger, Mr Ploenges has been at the helm of the MSEFL Saints for over 20 years.

It has been a tumultuous time for the club with little on-field success, the closure of the Nangwarry Mill and an arson attack which destroyed the clubrooms.

He played at Penola, Nangwarry and Tarpeena and also coached the Canaries.

Mr Ploenges received player life membership of the MSEFL in 1998.

He is in good company, as then Millicent Football Netball Club president Craig Tunkin won the national award a few years ago.
