Sand build up may hinder ramp access

Boaties have been warned there may be no access to the recreational boat ramp at Beachport when Easter falls next month.

Wattle Range Council is aware that sand build-up at the ramp is affecting accessibility during low tide.

“We typically address this with our annual dredging campaign, the most recent of which took place in August,” a council spokesperson said.

“This dredging removed over 7400 cubic metres of sand.

“It is usually enough to keep the ramp operational through to Easter, but the stormy weather prior to Christmas has led to an accelerated sand buildup.

“As a result, this may not be the case this year.

“We are currently exploring solutions.

“In the meantime, we remind boat operators to check tide conditions and inspect the ramp before launching or entering.”

The council has thanked the public for its understanding and cooperation.

Contractors have undertaken the dredging of the boat ramp since its construction over 20 years ago.

Meanwhile, council has undertaken other projects at the Beachport foreshore including the sealing of the boat ramp car park and upgrading the irrigation system and the toilets.
