Asea of gold will flow through the streets of Mount Gambier today for Daffodil Day to raise funds for the Cancer Council to support lifesaving cancer research.
Daffodils will be available for purchase for $10 by cash only in Mount Gambier outside of She’s Apples, the Mount Gambier Marketplace and Chapman’s Newsagency.
There will be a total of 250 bunches available across the three locations with a limited amount of merchandise including key rings and bright yellow daffodil pins available for $5.
The flowers and official merchandise will be sold by members of the Mount Gambier Branch of the SA Cancer Council and the Lions Club of Blue Lake City Lioness from 8.30am to 2pm or until all the bunches are sold out.
Mount Gambier Branch of the SA Cancer Council recently donated $25,000 to name the Mount Gambier Room at the $31m Cancer Council SA Greenhill Lodge.
Mount Gambier Breast Cancer Awareness Group member Loraine Baron recently stayed at the lodge for three weeks during radiotherapy for Ductal Carcinoma in Situ (DCIS), an early form of breast cancer contained in the milk ducts.
The building offers the most up to date accommodation for regional cancer patients alongside a range of on-site support services including social workers, transport to treatment, kitchen and dining areas and a range of inviting and welcoming communal spaces.
“Everything is there that you need. There is nothing there that you would need that you do not have. It has been very well thought out,” Mrs Baron said.
“If you feel like you need quiet time you can just go to your room and have a rest, if you feel like you want to chat there is a lounge area with a big TV down near the dining room, you can just wander in there and there is always someone to talk to.
Mrs Baron said there were also Cancer Council counsellors available.
“The staff are amazing, they just help you with anything,” she said.
“They take you shopping, a couple of times a week a car goes over to the shops if you need anything grocery wise or if you just want to go out for a coffee.
“The meals are to die for really, just amazing.
“If you are not feeling well you can just let them know and pop down and they will serve it up to you take away and you can take it to your room.
“There is a kitchen on every floor and everything you could wish for is in the kitchen.
“Another thing I did hear from other country patients is that across the road there is parklands and it feels like you are a little bit in the country.”
