Seaside swim put on hold

The annual Beachport jetty swim on Sunday was cancelled due to an adverse weather forecast.

The Beachport Surf Life Saving Club took the decision on Friday when the Bureau of Meteorology predicted high winds and a significant swell.

The club might be rescheduling it to another day.

Dubbed the “Out and Back Swim”, it has become a popular endurance test each summer for swimmers of all ages.

They are required to leave the shore, swim out 770m to the end of the jetty and return.

Such a swim is also a drawcard for spectators who watch from either the beach or the jetty.

Meanwhile, the extreme weather prompted the cancellation of all senior matches on Saturday in the Millicent/Naracoorte Cricket Association and the Mount Gambier and District Cricket Association.

Games are abandoned whenever the forecast temperature is 38 degrees or above.

It was the third such weather-related cancellation in the 2022/23 Millicent/Naracoorte season with the two others caused by rain.

It is also hoped the three abandoned rounds can be re-scheduled before the finals.

Meanwhile, the annual Smith/Walker Trophy T20 game between Mount Burr and the home team at Rendelsham at dusk on Saturday was also called off.
