Beachport real estate is soaring to new heights with a record asking price of almost $3m for “Seaview” on Beach Road.
The two-storied landmark has commanding views of Rivoli Bay and a local building company had been contracted to construct it in 2015/16.
It is the second house on this site to have been called “Seaview” with the original dwelling demolished around a decade ago.
A carved limestone sign bearing the name “Seaview” was salvaged from the first dwelling and incorporated into the second.
The builder of the first “Seaview” was Charles Willoughby Chambers (now deceased).
Known as Wilby, he was a prominent figure at Beachport for much of the twentieth century.
He commenced building a large Mount Gambier stone home “Seaview” just after World War II.
The house was situated on two blocks of land on the corner of Corigliano Street and Beach Road.
Mr Chambers built the house using the stone ashlars he cut with a hand saw from the large blocks of Mount Gambier stone.
He would fish for lobsters in the sea and mullet in Lake George.
As well as fishing, Mr Chambers helped build the kiln and had been manager of Wood’s & Company chicory factory at Rendelsham.
He served as a councillor on the former Beachport District Council and was a strong advocate in 1931 against the proposed amalgamation with the Millicent District Council (which came to fruition 66 years later).
