Second half South Gambier blitz snuffs out Casterton Sandford hopes

South Gambier headed to Casterton on Saturday and came home with the four points in a dominant fashion.

The opening quarter was fairly even as both sides started strongly, getting several goals on the board.

The Dees however were slightly better as they held an eight point lead over the Cats.

The competitive battle carried over into the second term as both sides continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Cats were able to kick one goal more than the Dees in the second term which helped cut the lead to four points as the sides went in to the half time break.

The Dees began to pull away from the Cats in the third term as they shifted up a gear.

South held the home side to only a minor score while they continued to keep the scoreboard ticking with eight goals in the quarter, with the Dees’ lead blowing out to 53 points.

The Cats kicked it up a notch in the final term, slotting four in the quarter, however the damage had been done as the deficit was far too grand to come back from.

South refused to let the Cats’ four goal quarter phase them as they ended the game on a high, kicking seven goals to seal the 75 point thrashing.

It was an all round solid performance from the Dees as they had 10 goal scorers in the game while Elliott Fisher bagged six for the game.

South Gambier defeated Casterton Sandford 20.11 (131) to 9.2 (56).

East Gambier v West Gambier

West Gambier took on the Doggies on Saturday at the Kennel with a special guest in attendance.

AFL legend Brendan Fevola was a keen onlooker and guest speaker at the East Gambier President’s Lunch.

The Roos got off to a hot start as they held the Doggies goalless while they began to develop a lead, with West kicking seven goals to hold a 45 point buffer after the opening quarter.

In the second term the Doggies finally got some goals on the board with three in the quarter.

Despite the improved play from the Doggies they still found themselves in a hole as West continued to push out the lead with another five goals on the board to lead by 56 at half time.

The Doggies responded well in the third term as they held the Roos to one goal while kicking two goals of their own.

However, after a low scoring quarter the Roos still held on to a comfortable 53 point lead.

The Roos found another level in the fourth, bouncing back to form to end the game on a high with a seven goal quarter while East only kicked, sealing the victory for the Roos.

West Gambier’s Brandon Newton had a massive game on Saturday, kicking 10 goals in the win.

West Gambier defeated East Gambier 20.16 (136) to 6.7 (43).

Millicent v North Gambier

North Gambier headed to Millicent on Saturday and achieved the tough task of defeating the Saints on their home deck for the first time this season.

Both sides started slow for their standards, both kicking a single goal as well as notching a few minor scores.

After the opening quarter the scores were tied 10 apiece.

The competitive play continued in the second term as neither side could pull away with a convincing lead.

The Saints put two more goals on the board while the Tigers kicked three which took them into the half time break with a five point lead.

It was rinse and repeat in the third as both sides remained in striking distance of one another.

North continued to put some goals on the board as they added three to their tally, while the Saints were able to slightly shorten the lead as they too kicked three goals while getting a few more minor scores.

Heading into the deciding quarter the Tigers held a four point lead.

After having a small grasp on the game for most of the day the Tigers began to run away with the win in the fourth.

The Saints could not come up with a big quarter as they only managed a single goal while the Tigers sealed the big victory as they kicked four to close out the game.

North Gambier’s Toby de Wit had a massive game for the Tigers as he led the team in goals with four.

North Gambier defeated Millicent 11.9 (75) to 7.9 (51).
