Shared path crossing safety to be improved

Shared path crossings across roads that intersect the Mount Gambier Rail Trail will soon be safer for cyclists and pedestrians following a $50,000 State Government boost.

The funding was allocated under the 2021/2022 State Bike Fund.

Crossings will be designed for construction on Bay Road, Crouch Street South, Ferrers Street, Wehl Street, White Avenue, Commercial Street West and Avey Road.

Council’s infrastructure general manager Barbara Cernovskis said council would also contribute $60,000 to the project.

“During busy times, more than 100 cyclists/pedestrians cross roads along the trail each hour,” Ms Cernovskis said.

“Crossing the roads as they are, especially during peak times, can be difficult and hazardous.

“This project will significantly improve pedestrian and cycling safety for all users of the rail trail.

“Council hopes this project will encourage more people to cycle rather than drive and remove any safety barriers to path use.”

Ms Cernovskis said it was expected the crossings would be completed by the end of the financial year.
