Shopping spree

There will be Sunday trading in Millicent for a portion of next month.

The town’s three regulated shops are permitted to extend their trading hours on December 6, 13 and 20. Under legislation dating back to the 1920s, Millicent’s Proclaimed Shopping District regulates the trading hours of Foster’s Foodland, Woolworths and Target Country.

It is expected that a number of other Millicent shops will also open their doors to cater for tourists and those making Christmas purchases. Sunday trading in December in Millicent has applied for several years and requires special dispensation from Treasurer Rob Lucas and the State Government through an application by the Millicent Business Community Association.

For almost two decades, Millicent has been the only country area of South Australia to have regulated shopping hours. The most obvious restriction is the ban on night-time, public holidays and Sunday trading.

It will be the last festive season trading after 56 years for Target Country as it is permanently closing its doors on January 23. Meanwhile, the MBCA will not stage a Millicent Lights Up event in 2020 owing to COVID-19 protocols. However, it will hold “Seasonal Cheer in the Square” for three hours from 6pm on December 18.

The all ages event will be staged in the empty car parks adjacent to Foster’s Foodland and the Bargain Market. There will be food and gin stalls and live music. Father Christmas will drive by but not stop.

Shearer’s Cook Café owner Melissa Armfield put the concept of a car park party to her fellow MBCA members earlier this year and it was strongly supported. “I will again be having an outdoors licensed gin stall,” Ms Armfield said. “It worked well a year ago when we had all the riders from the Great Vic Bike Ride stay overnight in Millicent.”
