Softball sides score big wins

The first game of the second Mount Gambier Softball League round between Warriors Blue and Concordes United was a cracking battle where the end result did not reflect the evenness of the contest.

Warriors Blue put its best foot forward by scoring four runs in the opening innings.

The rally was led off by a Daena Wombwell single before Leyna Bruggemann drove a triple and scored two more runs. Bruggemann crossed home base by another Bec White line drive, while Wombell finished the game with three safe hits, Queale with two to her favoured left side, Bruggemann with two long ball extra base hits, White with two and a laser that nearly took the hand off of United’s pitcher Dana Jones.

First-gamer Kirsty Young also made great contact with two singles up the middle, while Jones pitched most of the game for United and had two of her team’s six safe hits for the day.

Leonie McCallum’s sizzling single was a two-run RBI in the third innings put Concordes United on the board.

Concordes threatened with baserunners in the bottom of the sixth innings, but Bruggemann snaffled a line drive and created a game-ending double play to confirm the six-run win.

Wanderers and Concordes White played out an entertaining match in which one decisive innings allowed the latter to take the points.

The early stages were an even affair with Concordes leading by one run after the first innings.

However, the Wanderers bats came alive in the second innings.

Safe hits to Belinda Bonney, Lily CliffordFinch, Ieshia Bonney and Sarah Morretti pushed Wanderers to a massive nine-run innings.

Concordes was forced to play catch up for the remainder of the contest and Wanderers

pitcher Em Hart was accurate on the mound to ensure her side won 11 runs to four.
