Softballers brave tough conditions

Softball resumed at Blue Lake Sports Park with a thrilling game between Wanderers and Demons on Saturday afternoon.

The Wanderers team handled the wet and blustery conditions much better than its opponents.

Wanderers was patient in the batting box and drew out a number of walks, as fielding errors crept into the Demons’ game.

Sarah Moretti struck two of Wanderers’ four safe hits, but Demons had more safe hits, with Bella Morale, Cody Manning and Montana Millard scoring two each.

However, they were unable to string them together when it mattered and were well held in the end by Em Hart’s off-pace pitching.

Demons went into the bottom of the last innings ahead by one, but Wanderers scored two runs on a wild throw to earn them the three points after an 8-7 win.

Concordes White continued its excellent form with the bat and ball against ladder-leader Warriors Blue.

With the wind going with the hitters the game was a slug fest from the get-go, with Warriors starting quickly with two runs thanks to a Nicole Vause triple and a Leyna Bruggeman RBI single.

Concordes then scored four of in the second innings and the highlight was a home run by youngster Maddy Sutherland.

Billie Jones also pitched very effectively in the swirly conditions by striking out five and only giving away one walk over five innings.

Outfielders Kate Altschwager and Leonie McCallum covered a huge amount of ground for Concordes and took some great catches, while Brandi Miller was a star at second base.

In the end safe hits were the difference, with Concordes the deserved winners 15 runs to nine.

The evening game between Warriors White and Concordes United had the worst of the weather conditions and this was reflected with a lot of walks.

The Warriors players put themselves in a hole early by conceding 10 runs in the first innings to give up an eight-run lead.

Warriors slowly closed the margin but fell six runs short of victory. Dana Jones was pivotal by taking some pace off the ball in an effective pitching performance, while she also struck three safe hits.
