South paints town red

The Bendigo Bank Western Border Football League grand final day is set to be a red wash after South Gambier sent a side into the decider in every grade on Saturday.

The A Grade victory was the cherry on top of a dream beginning to the Demons’ finals campaign.

The fun started at 8.30am when South White doubled North Gambier’s score in the Under 14’s qualifier.

The Tigers were only allowed to find the big sticks briefly in the third term as the likes of Harrison Ellis and William Attiwill guided the Demons to a comfortable 30-15 win.

North must endure a clash with Millicent this weekend to stay alive after the latter edged out a spirited East team at home.

The scoreboard was locked after a low-scoring first half before the Saints cracked the game open in the third.

The Bulldogs had no answer for the likes of Charlie Damhuis and Kobe Gibson, who pushed Millicent’s 15-point triumph.

The Under 16’s decider was guaranteed to feature one South side, but the question was which one and the White team came to the party at Vansittart Park.

Thanks to the hard work of Sam Sims and Mitch Harrold, South White raced to an early lead and did not give it up until the final siren.

After going down by 21 points to its sister side, South Red must now navigate its way through Millicent which is riding high from a convincing win over West on Sunday.

The Roos were blown away in the second half being outscored 48-1 as Eli Redman, Kobe Shanks and Jack Haggett formed an undeniable combination.

The Saints were not so fortunate in Saturday’s Under 18’s qualifier against the Demons.

After hanging tough before the main break, Millicent could not stop the South train conducted by Elliott Fisher’s seven-goal haul.

The Demons motored to a 51-point thumping and will be tough to stop.

West Gambier joins in this weekend’s prelim after it accounted for North on Sunday.

After an early shower only two goals were scored in the first term before the Roos staked their claim.

Josh Cornolo was a dominant presence in the forward line being the only multiple goal scorer for the day, while Elijah Firth fought hard for the Tigers.

West’s backline made the difference to win 40-17.

South’s strength in numbers was on full display in the Reserves semi-final at Vansittart Park on Saturday.

The Demons struggled to shake off a gutsy Roos outfit during the first two quarters, but the second half was a different story.

South bombarded the scoreboard compiling 98 points after the main break, while the Sam Von Duve led West could only register 14.

Henry Capewell was the chief destroyer with seven goals to sign off the 141-44 smashing.

The Roos and Saints will fight for a spot in the decider alongside the Demons.

Millicent forced East to suffer its third of four defeats on Sunday through strong performances from Jordan Pratt, Craig Gysbers and Colby O’Connor.

The Bulldogs never recovered from a slow start and were sent packing after going down by 20 points.
