Moves are afoot to trim the speed limit on a section of the Riddoch Highway at Coonawarra.
Public comment will be sought by Wattle Range Council on a proposal to reduce the speed limit from 110kph to 100kph between the Penola bypass and Clayfield Road.
The decision to go to public consultation was taken at the January monthly council meeting.
It followed a written request from Coonawarra Vignerons Association secretary Hugh Koch and consideration of a report from engineering services director Peter Halton.
There was a brief debate with councillors agreeing to the need for a reduction in the interest of road safety.
The only point of contention was the northern end point.
Come what may, the final decision on the matter rests with the Department of Infrastructure and Transport.
Mr Halton said council had considered a similar request 12 years ago and decided to take no action.
However, Mr Halton has recommended support for safety reasons.
In his letter, Mr Koch said the Riddoch Highway was now signposted 100kph around the bypass to Penola
“Exiting cellar doors on to a 110kphighway have always been considered a highly risky proposition,” Mr Koch said.
“With the upgrade to the rail trail and the new directional signage about to be installed directing people across the highway to other cellar doors, this reduction seems a sensible suggestion.”
His letter also contained requests for kangaroo warning signs and some tree trimming along the Riddoch Highway.
